Role of Diversity in Peace

Recently there has been focus on the current war between Ukraine and Russia. Tomorrow, Friday 24/02/2023, marks one year since this war started- a war many strategists said would not happen (I was not one of them as for me the signs were obvious, but then again I was wearing mask re COVID since Feb 26, 2020 ). People who said that there would be a war were seen as being promoters of war, whereas we were simply pointing out the obvious.

What I have since seen in all the various "diplomatic gatherings" supposedly aimed at trying to obtain a resolution and obtain peace, is a complete absence of diversity. It appears that the important role of diversity, as it is in many businesses, is also being pushed aside in the many attempts to implement peace.

In a recent discussion with the President of Systemic Diversity and Inclusion Group ( SDIG )- Dr. Joseph Nwoye, we discussed the role that diversity can indeed play in such a setting.

Contrary to those that skilled in diversity, it is a well known fact amongst diversity professionals (the real ones, not the ones who profess to be such based on some random course they attended, but those of us who have spent our entire careers evangelizing on the importance of diversity for success) plays a crucial role in implementing peace because it brings together people from different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. This can lead to greater understanding, empathy, and respect for others, which are all essential for building trust and resolving conflicts peacefully.

By including diverse voices and perspectives in peacebuilding processes, solutions can be developed that are more inclusive and representative of the needs and interests of all parties involved. This can help to address underlying causes of conflict and promote sustainable peace.

Furthermore, it is a well acknowledged fact that diversity can also promote innovation and creativity, which can lead to new and effective approaches to peacebuilding. When individuals from diverse backgrounds work together, they bring a range of skills, ideas, and experiences that can lead to more comprehensive and successful peacebuilding efforts.

In summary, diversity is essential for promoting peace because it fosters greater understanding, inclusivity, innovation, and ultimately, sustainable peace.
